Brain activity and navigation

Brain activity, as displayed on the hand-held app, was reviewed throughout the whole journey then analysed post hoc for each participant, for each ‘run’ and for each ‘group’. Post hoc analysis was achieved by plotting landmarks as timing points onto the plots generated by the app, to provide a spatially located graphic of brain activity. Drawing software (Adobe Illustrator) was used to connect peaks and troughs to generate a smoothed path, set between fluctuating peaks and troughs.

In general, there was little consistency in the graphs that could reasonably be allocated to any objective stimuli across the entire journey for any individual or across the group; however, closer investigation of the end point of the journey, where participants arguably had had a little time to become familiar both with the experimental conditions and the environment of the route, and at the point where the key wayfinding decision has to be made, did show some indicative consistency that might be worthy of further investigation (Figure 7.5).

In all cases recorded, the reading term ‘Engagement’ rose slightly between the final buttress and the first corner, dropped coming into and after turning the first corner, then started to rise again.

It might be that this brain-activity peak was associated with anticipation of the turn. The pattern was observed in both first and second runs. In most cases recorded, the reading termed ‘Excitement’ rises to a peak at or just after buttress 2, a point at which some participants looked to the left at the path from the bridge (or the sign in some cases). After this, the level of activity drops, perhaps as a decision is made, or the direction of future travel is identified.
